New Beginnings

It was time. A stocky, black-haired man approached Mr. Steve at his window and demanded identification and papers. As Steve reached into his glove compartment, I opened the blanket a little more so I could get a better look. Tall, muscular, crew-cut. The scars on his face led me to believe he'd been in one too many fights in this lifetime.

"Here," Steve said as he handed him the papers.

The man took hold of them and stepped back. He retreated back to his booth to go check them further.

We waited. I knew what was coming. It was just a matter of time. We'd been practicing for weeks now. All for this moment.

Finally he stepped out of his booth and began to pace toward us again. I looked down at my arms and realized I had goosebumps. I was shaking uncontrollably. This was it.

"Get down," Steve told me. "Here it is."

My legs started to shake. The veins were bulging out of my arms. I'd lost control.

"Just you," army guy said. Normally someone would say this as a question but he wasn't asking, he was telling. Steve nodded.

"Unlock the doors."

He opened the side door behind Steve, gave it a good look and closed it so hard I thought my eardrum had blown out.

"Pop the trunk." This is it. No turning back.

Screech. The trunk flew open. My teeth started to chatter. Body trembling like a jackhammer, the human robot felt around what seemed to be every part of the trunk except the few feet i was taking up.

I heard the crack as his hand hit the back window. I felt it move to the blanket, and gradually across the trunk until...he had my foot. Or at least I thought he did. He squeezed it. His hand stung. It was a claw. I didn't dare move though. This was the biggest moment of my life. He lifted up one of the blankets covering me. I was trembling now, I had lost control of my own body.

Then I heard the trunk shut. The man walked up to Steve and stretched his neck inside the window. He glanced all over the front. "There anything else you wanna tell me," he sounded madder than before.

"No sir," Steve stayed
