The article talks about haw a merger can put retail jobs in jeopardy. The goal of a merger and acquisition is straight forward and simple, to improve the over all function and successes of the business. Orlando Veras a spokesman for Macy's acknowledged: "We are trying to make the best of both worlds at the remaining store. The process has begun." The company is doing everything possible to increase profit. That is why the article is talking about selling or closing unprofitable stores, and moving Macy's into its space. Stores that are doing well are going to be renamed as Macy's in the fall of 2006.
Acquisition- procurement, acquires, acquirement
Merger- two companies becoming into one
Monopoly- a market in which there is only one seller for a product or service
Consolidation- incorporate, unified, conjoint
Layoff- cutting dawn positions, terminate
From a business stand point I think that merger have a lot of advantages .One of them is expansion, a larger growing firm may try to pick above its smaller rivals in order to grow bigger. In order to do that the company is downsizing, because when merger occurs there is two of everything. That is a disadvantage because a lot of human recourse capital is going to be laid off or simply terminated. I think that companies should help their employees to get a new job and provide outplace services for them. Companies that do that might have a better chance of retaining the loyalty of the surviving workers. Over the long term this will help the organization to increase revenue.
