Throughout art history, artists have used the theme of mother and child for religious purposes, cultural purposes and for expressing the strong relationship between the mother and child. Many photographs or paintings that were taken during the great depression or during war show the poverty and sadness and the bond between the mother and child. Artists across time have created artworks in different mediums by being inspired by the relationship between the mother and child. All three artists I chose deal with controversial issues in their artworks,

Mary Cassat was attracted to the simplicity of the Japanese design and the way in which they used colour in their artworks, in this piece Cassat used a light to hit the child's pale skin and the rosiness of both the mother and the child. The viewer's eyes would immediately notice the contrast between the various lines in this painting. Mary Cassat mainly focussed her artworks on being indoors to get better light focussed on the characters, in the image 'the bath' both the characters faces are faced in the same direction which accentuates the characters in this piece. In all her artwork Mary Cassat creates contact between the mother and child and in this particular piece the mother and the child's hands are in contact with each other resembling the relationship between the two.

In the image ' Yo mama' by the black African - American photographer she shows a deep concern for social issues. These images portray what sexisium and racism African - Americans encounter in the United States. This image shows the strength and safisication of women and that they can support their children through poverty. The fact that Rene is in such a powerful upright standing position creates a protective barrier over the children.

Vanessa Beecroft's work are base on conceptual issues , she uses her own life events to create compositions. Each piece of work she creates is concerntrate around a specific area and around social , political or racial concerns. This image 'VB SS South Sudan' is linked to a racial issues after Beecroft visited an orphanage in southern Sudan and breast fed two black badies who she then adopted.
