Movie Review

Many think that movie's these days are just a waste of movie, time, and brain cells. But in reality there are some movies that have some historical reference or value to them. A great example of a movie like that would be Cold Mountain. Directed by Anthony Minghella Cold Mountain is a compelling story of love, honor, and service. Nicole Kidman playing Ada and Jude Law as Inman fall deeply in love with each other and fight to stay together when everything in their time is pulling them apart.

Cold Mountain may have won an Academy Award but the historical reference may not be 100 percent correct. Cold Mountain takes place at the dawn of the civil war, the men of Cold Mountain, North Carolina, rush to join the confederate army. The American Civil War (1862-1865) was a major war between the United States 'Union" and eleven Southern Slave states. The movie, considered a drama states nothing of the background information of the war. They only showed brutal fighting scenes between the two opponents. There was also no much talk of the historical information pertaining to the Civil War.

Even if they don't indepthly explain the history behind the Civil War or what is really going on during it, they show a great example of how emotional it was to have a loved on fighting in the war. In the movie Ada played by Nicole Kidman falls head over heals for Inman played by Jude Law. Once the war kicks into gear the small town of Cold Mountain is called into active duty and Inman must leave Ada's loving side. Ada is a "Southern Bell" and with the help of Ruby played by Renee Zellweger on her (Ada's) farm. While the girls are busy farming their minds are taken off of the thought of their loved ones at war.

In the movie Ada's neighbor played by Eileen Atkins hides her two boys in her barn to keep them from going to war. An evil man that was put in the Village of Cold Mountain to make sure everything was in order without the men this is called the Confederate Home Guard played by Brendan Gleeson. The farm that Eileen's character lives on is always nice and perfect, but one an old couple live there. So, the Home Guard went and punished Swangers, killed the husband and tortured the wife. I think that this is a great example of what was really going on back in the time period of the cold war.
