Purpose:

To calculate the speed of sound in air.

Equipment: See Lab 13.2 on page 479 in Physics: Concepts and Connections

Procedure: See Lab 13.2 on page 479 in Physics: Concepts and Connections

Data:

Frequency of tuning fork 1000 Hz 512 Hz

Length of air column (L) 0.07 m 0.1425 m

Diameter of tube (D) 0.025 m 0.025 m

Temperature (T) 22.5 C 22.5 C

Analysis:

1. For 1000 Hz tuning fork:

λ = 4(L + 0.3D)

= 4(0.07 m + 0.3(0.025 m)

= 0.31 m

For 512 Hz tuning fork:

λ = 4(L + 0.3D)

= 4(0.1425 m + 0.3(0.025 m)

= 0.6 m

2. For 1000 Hz tuning fork:

V = λf

= (0.31 m)(1000 Hz)

= 310 m/s

For 512 Hz tuning fork:

V = λf

= (0.6 m)(512 Hz)

= 307.2 m/s

3. Vs = 332 m/s + 0.6T

= 332 m/s + 0.6(22.5C)

= 345.5 m/s

4. For 1000 Hz tuning fork:

Error = Experiment value - Expected Value x 100%

Expected Value

= 307 m/s - 345.5 m/s x 100%

345.5 m/s

= -11.1%

For 512 Hz tuning fork:

Error
