Good Morning. My name is TSgt Chris Kay and today I'm going to talk to you about the man who is known as the Crusader of Airpower, Billy Mitchell.

I'll talk a little bit about his upbringing, his career, and, his court-martial and resignation.

Trans: It's funny when I decided to brief about Billy Mitchell, I didn't even know he was from Milwaukee like me.

Main Point 1: Upbringing- Born 29 Dec 1879 in Nice France, vacation, youngest of three

Grand son of a congressman, son of a senator and banking

Fairly wealthy upbringing, a lot of family turmoil

Average in school, loved sports, defiant about school, as school went on he developed personality charisma.

Relationship with parents distant, the more unhappy he was the more he excelled in sports

Most of teenage relationships w/parents was via letters

Transferred to Columbia univ, but poor relationship w/ parents a lack of desire left

Trans: Always thought would join family business, but at 19, joined military to anger dad

Main Point 2: Career

Enlisted in the military, joined signal corps. He liked the structure of military

Two years later 2nd lt and already began criticizing decisions

Began a turbulent Career known as great during times of war, not so during peace

Began achieving recognition fast burner, marked for advancement

Then on 17 Dec 1903 (what happened) kitty hawk, changed Mitchell forever

Peaked interest in flight small, learned to fly on own 1916

1917 mitchell flew recon balloons really saw value of air in battle now lt col starting to make great progress in air arena

Air brigade cdr, regarded as best fighting cdr, but not popular big hand in victory wwI
