Dali Museum

I visited the Salvador Museum on Wednesday March 8th, 2006. Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali was born in Catalonia, Spain on May 11th, 1904. His parents were Salvador Dali I Cusi and Felipa Domenech Ferres. His older brother, also named Salvador died prior to the birth of Dali. His sister Ana Maria was three years younger than him. At the age of 13 he began visiting the School of Art and his first painting was produced. It was made in 1913 called Vilabertin. Dali's father was very disciplinary, while Dali's mother encouraged him to draw. In 1917 Dali's father organized an exhibition of his charcoal drawings in their home, then in 1919 Dali had his first public exhibition at the Municipal Theater in Figueres. 2 years later Dali's mother died of cancer. Soon Dali's father got remarried to the sister of Felipa, and Dali resented the marriage. The next year Dali moved into the Student' residence in Madrid. In 1929 Dali met his future wife and muse, Gala. Gala was a Russian immigrant born with the name Helena Dmitievna Deluvina Diakonova. At the time she was married to surrealist poet Paul Eluard. Gala and Dali were married in a civil ceremony in 1934 after living together since 1929. They were later re-married in a Roman Catholic ceremony in 1958, but before that in1940 Gala and Dali moved to the United States when the war started in Europe. In June of 1982 Gala died. After her death Dali lost much of his will to live. He deliberately dehydrated himself. He moved to the Castle in Pubol that he bought for Gala. In 1984 a fire broke out in his bedroom, the caused of the fire are still unknown. Dali later moved back to Figueres where a group of friends took care of him in his final years. He died in 1984.

Some people thought Dali was a madman, but I believe he was not. His paintings are unique and use objects in the paintings to produce another picture. For example his painting Slave Market With the Disappearing Bust of Voltaire, in that painting the arrangement of the two Dutch women formed The Bust of Voltaire. One famous painting is the Lincoln in Dalivision, up close you can see Gala looking out onto the Mediterranean Sea and in the bottom left hand corner you can see a condensed picture of the whole painting and a painting of Gala. If you look at the painting faraway and look closely you can see Lincoln. Dali,
