Multicultural Matrix and Analysis Worksheet
In the United States there are many ethnic groups with different cultural identities. Each group has their own stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. African, Jewish, Chinese, Asian, Mexican, and Native Americans are all ethnic groups that are affected by stereotypes. These prejudices in the United States directly affect their employability.
People identify different cultures by appearance and race. Each group has been generally stereotyped. For example African Americans are stereotyped as people who are always looking for a hand out, instead of hand up. Speaking Ebonics, hair styles, skin complexion, and dress styles are all ways of judging someone's race. Another example of a group stereotype, is Asia Americans cannot drive, because their eyes are slanted so they cannot see. People assume all Asians are intelligent. Third group is Native Americans; many believe they are all alcoholics. They are often portrayed as unintelligent. People may think all Natives Americans live in T-Pee's. As for those Natives who choose to leave the reservation they may find it difficult to adjust to American culture. The fourth group is Mexican Americans; people believe Mexican's are all illegal aliens. Stereotypes say that they bring down property values by having generations living in one house. People think all Mexicans are Catholics, and use up government resources and don't pay taxes. People often blame Mexicans for costing taxpayer their jobs, by providing cheap labor. Jewish are betrayed as stingy. People feel that Jews consider themselves superior to other races. Another stereotype will be is that all Jews are wealthy. These are true stereotypes but they are not the majority.
Each group of race have experienced prejudiced. African Americans with slavery, segregation and unequal education, Asians considered as outsiders. Many Americans believe Native Americans are unstable and people only view them as low class and alcoholics. Americans accuse Mexican for the job shortage and want them to leave the United States.
