The quake caused an extremely stressful situation with mass death, and widespread collapse of community life and economy. The 1988 earthquake struck Armenia in the wrong place at the wrong time and Armenia was completely blindsided and not ready for such massive destruction.

Therefore, first things first we had to pack everything we owned and get ready for a long and tiresome trip. We also had to get our passports ready to enter into the USA. Well the big day had arrived and we had all of our friends and relatives waiting with us at the airport to bid us farewell. However at the time I did not realize how significant this trip actually was. All I really cared about at the time was we are getting on a plane and going to see grandpa and grandma. So we boarded the air plane and were off to Cranston, Rhode Island. The plane ride was so long and I don't remember much other than my sister and I kept repeating the same phrase over and over again, "Are we there yet"? When the plane landed and we had arrived to Logan Airport in East Boston Massachusetts. We walked through the airport customs and on the other side waiting for us were my grandparents and my uncle. The date was January 27, 1991. When we arrived to my uncle's house there were a bunch of people waiting to greet us, cousins, uncles, grandparents, and friends. Everything seemed to be going well.
