National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco)
Known to be one of Asia's leading aluminum industries, National Aluminium Company Limited was integrated as a public sector venture of the Government of India in 1981. Nalco's operations involve activities like mining, refining, smelting, casting, generating power and also certain transportation relation projects making them well established in the field of production and exporting of aluminium related engagements. Their primary goal is to satisfy both, the customers as well as the employees in terms of shares and stakes. Nalco's corporate office is located in Orissa.
Nalco has kept aside 2% of its net profit of the year for the purpose of CSR activities. In Angul and Domanjodi, mobile medical units of Nalco these place and provide health camps along with distributing free medicines. They have made an effort to instill scientific temper among rural students by taking them to Bhubaneswar and visiting important centers. Through the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund Scheme, Nalco has set up 197 cyclone shelters as a means to deal with the super cyclone in Orissa. They have contributed to the for the victims of flood in Orissa, earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, tsunami, Gujarat earthquake through the Chief Minister relief fund and the Prime Minister's national relief fund. They have also been generous in their donations to the National Defence Fund for the Kargil War with the employee's donating a day's salary. They also provided funds for the Sports Authority of India towards training during the Athens Olympics. Nalco established an English-medium school and an Oriya-medium school, in Orissa. Collaborating with the management of Delhi Public School Society, New Delhi and Chinmaya Mission Trust, Bombay, respectively, two more schools were established.
Learning Outcomes
Instead of focusing on many places, their target locations to carry out the CSR activities are places around the manufacturing set-up. This actually helps the organization too. It is one of the few organisations which have set up a fixed amount every year for the purpose of CSR. In int's initiative to protect the environment, NALCO is mainly concerned with manufacturing repercussions and their first step towards being a responsible corporate body involves taking the necessary steps to protect the environment by minimizing the negative effect of their production. However, they have also seen to the needs of those around their manufacturing set-ups by providing basic requirements. NALCO has also lent a hand in helping the world a better place by providing rehabilitation facilities. One important contribution of theirs is towards sports which not most of the industries focus on.
ACC Pvt Ltd.
One of India's leading cement manufacturers , ACC Limited was Established in 1936, it has moved onto become pioneers of cement and concrete manufacturers. They are the highest users of limestone, most faithful customers of the domestic coal industry, Indian Railways and were one of the first organizations in India to embrace the concept of commitment to environmental protection. ACC is acclaimed to be a responsible corporate citizen. It is the only company from the cement industry to be included in the list of Consumer Super Brands of India.
They have set-up schools in many locations, initiated literacy programmes for adults, especially women from Self Help Groups. They worked towards developing educational infrastructure. ACC has helped youth gain employment through providing training institutions; financial support and helping these youngsters enroll for placements. ACC Damodhar plant has provided vocational training and also joined hands with L&T Skills Training Institute for helping youngsters in construction skills. ACC has pushed women to become members of Self Help Groups. These members are provided with training in various aspects. ACC AHEAD (Association of Health, Education And Development), is another group comprising of ACC employees' wives where a platform is provided for them to be trained in activities like embroidery, knitting, masala and pickle making and/or bags. They have conducted health camps and mobile health check-ups along with health and nutrition awareness programs, ante and post natal care programmes and built toilets to promote health. Two anti retroviral treatment centres HIV+ patients have been established along with counseling services. 'Clean and Green Habitat' project was initiated to bring about waste segregation and the waste is bio-composed. Plastic waste is used alternative fuel saving a lot of fuel. ACC has helped rehabilitate victims of natural calamities by constructing required infrastructure.
Learning Outcomes
Here they focus on helping people help themselves, in the sense they encourage people to attend training programs, women to join SHGs and in a way help the people to be self-reliant. They provide all the necessary resources to help a person shine in the fields he or she can. They have not only provided ample opportunity for the employees but also extended support to their families. One important contribution of theirs is towards decomposing waste and saving fuel. In terms of health, their major focus was on HIV+ patients.
Apollo Hospitals
Dr. Prathap C Reddy is the founder Chairman of Apollo Hospitals until a certain change of events in 1983. At present there are over 50 hospitals across India. It has promoted India's status in terms of healthcare. Apollo Hospitals has been awarded JCI accreditations for 7 of its branches which is the most by any hospital group in India. They provide a large number of facilities like pharmacies, clinics, provision of healthcare at the patient's doorstep and consultancy services too. Apollo also provides services to facilitate business, telemedicine services, education, training programmes and research activities.
Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals organized Apollo Dil Ki Daud a marathon which was to increase awareness and prevent heart diseases through a healthy lifestyle. This was supported by the Billion Hearts Beating Campaign. 200 doctors and nurses from the hospital ran to support this cause. The "SAVE" India Campaign was launched to create awareness regarding health problems like aneurysm, stroke and vascular disease which could lead to death or disability. The Ahmedabad branch adopted a village in Gujarat and organized health and cleanliness awareness programmes. In Bangalore, in order to train at least one member of a family on basic life support systems, the Apollo Life Saver Community Training Programme was initiated.
