Introduction

Overview

The University of Georgia has initiated the Virtual Electronic Network for University Services, hereinafter refereed to as VENUS, project through the University Computing and Networking Services (UCNS) department on the Athens campus. This project will create a fiber optic network infrastructure to interconnect approximately 200 buildings over an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) backbone. This backbone will provide connectivity for the legacy LANs already in use and allow for the development of new multimedia applications.

The project is phased to match the capabilities of UGA to acquire funds, allocate space, construct backbone telecommunication closets, install fiber optics, install network electronics, and configure the systems.

The purpose of this document is to present a detailed logical design of the campus fiber optic network infrastructure. The reader of this document is assumed to have basic knowledge of networking and approaches to physical connectivity infrastructures. Installation of the designed network will then enable implementation of ATM technology.

Overview of Logical Design Documentation

The logical design documentation provides UGA with the following information:

Existing and future requirements for the logical design.

A definition of recommended topologies for the backbone network, the cluster networks, and the building networks.

Overview of chosen technologies.

Applicable standards.

Systems performance requirements.

Budgetary implementation costs.

Sample inserts for network electronics.

The logical design concepts will be used by the physical designer to establish:

Media interfaces, sizes, and quantities

Cross-connections

Rack layouts

This logical design concept will provide network backbone requirements and overall systems performance criteria which may be referenced
