Nuclear Radiation

There are many ways that the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still and the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" are similar. "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction story that deals with nuclear radiation and what the future world would be like if there was an atomic bomb. This short story is a good example of what could happen in the future. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a movie that also has the same genre, that it is science fiction. It helps people realize the horror of the use of nuclear weapons.

The main theme for both the movie and the short story is that both are trying to get across the message that nuclear weapons are more serious than some people think. Nuclear weapons have so much power and both show that in different ways. By reading the short story it shows what would happen to the whole world if there was an atomic bomb and how the radiation would kill everyone in its path. However, the movie tries to explain it in a different way. Gort, a robot, comes to earth with a man of the name Klaatu and both try to warn everyone on the earth what would happen if we keep on using nuclear weapons. Klaatu tells everyone that if there is still violence being taken place on earth that the other planets are not going to sit and watch it anymore. Therefore, he warned the people that there would be no more earth.

The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles." That illustrates and warns people the effect that radiation has. If people could think of different possibilities to solve war then that should try because the worst disaster that could happen has to deal with atomic weapons.

An example from the movie that shows about both the movie and short story is similar is when Klaatu tells Helen Bensen why he has come to earth. Everyone besides Helen and Professor Barnhardt wants to take him away and kill him because they think he is going to destroy the earth. But in reality, Klaatu has come to earth only to warn Americans how the earth could actually be destroyed and that is it's
