The role of health care reform in shifting the focus from a disease-oriented medical system toward one of wellness and prevention, and the way nurses fits into this change.
This transformation policy is essential as it will turn the health care system into an actual care system. A significant part of the national budget usually goes into the healthcare system annually, but only about 4% of that money is invested in public health and prevention programs, despite the fact that studies have shown prevention of diseases can effectively decrease expenses in health care (Schimpff, 2012).
By ensuring that health care is accessible universally and equity in health care is provided at homes, schools and in the community as a whole. Equal priority in the access of healthcare is another role which can be undertaken by this system. Discrimination in the hospitals due to social caste, religion, ethnicity among others to be eliminated to ensure that the system achieves its objective towards prevention and wellness.
It will contribute to reduced costs in the procurement of prescription drugs which have gone out of control; it will also make it affordable or the elderly, uninsured and others who cannot afford the drugs to have access to better healthcare focused on prevention (Schimpff, 2012). The reform will reduce the abuse and overuse of prescription medicine and other drugs since there has been an increase in the illegal use of such. Through education and extension programs, the reform has come up with platforms to educate the society on health concerns and equip them with skills since no population should have the burden of diseases. This is one place where nurses can fit in educating the public (World Health Organization, 2015).
Strategies have been put in place to identify priority areas that call for immediate attention in improving the people’s health including healthy nutrition, reproductive health, emotional well-being, drug abuse prevention and active living among others. Focusing on these priorities seeks to address the underlying causes of health problems (World Health Organization, 2015).
Nurses can be suitable in this shift by inspiring people to engage in healthier lifestyles leading to longer lives. Nurses can also recommend people to get evidence-based diagnosis such as screening and precautionary drugs thus encouraging prevention and wellness.
