Oedipus
When Oedipus is first shown, his appearance is quite elegant. He walks out from his
castle and is dressed in a white suit that shines brighter than the sun itself. Toward the
end right after he takes his own sight, he is dressed in nothing more than rags. In the
beginning of the story Oedipus' words are that of encouragement when he is talking to
his people. As the story goes on and he is finding little bit by little about his past,
Oedipus becomes threatening with his words. A man who knows about where
Oedipus came from is threatened with death by the king himself if he does not give
up the information he has. King Oedipus is very motivated when it comes to his
past. Oedipus keeps asking question after question wanting to get to the truth.
Even when the queen pleads with him to stop his crusade for the truth, Oedipus
does not listen. Even the elders try and talk some sense into poor Oedipus, but
he is just too motivated to quit. His personality at first is that of a true noble
king. Talking to the peasants and common folk at the beginning of the story.
Treating them like they were on the same level as he was. He is a happy king
until he receives news his father was infact King Laius. The once happy king
is now faced with the truth and knows now that he killed his father and
married his mother. In one scene he talks about the queen having a husband
from a husband and having children from her own child. Knowing this changes
Oedipus for the worst. He was a wealthy king who everyone respected. He
depended on himself and no one else. Now blind by taking his own sight after
seeing Jocasta hang herself, Oedipus must rely on all.
