Abstract
In this assignment, I am going to describe brief on the case study of the HY Dairies INC, which talk about the women who work in the top management position and she does great work and shows her good performance due to which Her boss offers her new position for which she is not happy and so this case also involves in the stereotyping. So here the entire question asked by this case study has been answered briefly and discussed the answer from both points of view.
HY Dairies Inc.
In this assignment we are going to discuss about the organization i.e. HY Dairies Inc in which there is misunderstanding which has been created between the Rochelle an assistant brand manager and Gilman vice president of the marketing. So in this case we are going to discuss three question in which we are going to find out the knowledge of the social identity theory and stereotyping and also discuss on actually what went wrong between them and also put some point of view on perceptual error which are apparent in this case and finally discuss on what should be done so that misperception can be minimize.
SHORT SUMMARY
HY Dairies Inc. is a large Midwestern dairy product manufacturer company. There they showed the improvement in the sales and market share of its gourmet ice- cream. This improvement was credited to the Rochelle Beauport, the Assistant Brand Manager who was been assigned to the brand. Due to her dedication on work which was less than two years joining HY Dairies, by this Gilman the Vice President Marketing was much pleased towards her. For this achievement he wanted to reward Rochelle by offering her the job of the Market research coordinator which will help her to broaden her marketing experience, with some high profile work. By this decision, Rochelle was not happy on offering new position as she was enjoying her position as brand management in which there was opportunity to control the product that will affect the profitability of the company.
As Rochelle felt that the new position job was to perform from backroom as technical support position and she felt of being sidelined. Also she also did not feel that this was the route to the top management in the organization, also knowing little that the Gilman career had been boosted by occupying this job position at the HY Dairies year before. So at the same times she was shocked and also wonders of if she had done something wrong on her work performance so to deserve this treatment. As she felt of being sidelined because she thought she was woman and a person of the color.
In her previous employment career she perceived the similar treatment. Here Rochelle did not know that whether she must challenge Gilman and make a try to change the practice of sexist and racist at the HY Dairies or next is she can leave the company. So the Gilman also did not realize that he actually gave Rochelle a wrong perception about the whole situation. Due to this Rochelle is facing difficult to decide confronting Gilman to change what Rochelle think is possibly about the racist practice, sexiest or the simply quite.
What Went Wrong Here
Talking about the stereotyping it is the derivation of the social identity theory. Stereotyping can be defined as the groups of people who are characteristics impose because of their nationality, race, and sexual orientation among others (Nittle, 2017, Article). When we divide stereotype, then we find two different types of it. As Descriptive stereotype are defined as the perceivers' belief or thought about the different characteristics of social group and also it indicates about the roles, behaviors, attributes which describe about the group of others (Gill, 2004). And Prescriptive stereotypes are defined as the specific behavioral norms which people must uphold so that it can avoid derogation or punishment by others (Gill, 2004). So we can understand the stereotyping sets the groundwork for the discrimination and prejudice.
In this case, social identity theory is applied that Rochelle Beauport has a sense of explicit of her social identity as the women and the visible minority member in the management position, as the indication she has made a statement that " she was one of the top level women and few minorities which are visible in the brand management at HY Dairies" Due to this strong social identity had made negative perception towards her boss, Gilman, that which she has been grouped him with the men in the management position, so talking in other word, she may have engaged in the homogenization, categorization and differentiation (McShane & Glinow, 2013, p. 73).
So, in this case what went wrong here is Mr. Gilman thought that Rochelle would love to get the new position which he had gone through before his position today. So Mr. Gilman thought that by this new position opportunity which was offered to her by this she would enhance her career at HY Dairies. But this went opposite, and he was not aware of social concept and different self like in the Rochelle case. So the factor like work experience, characteristics and social identity was related to this stereotyping.
Perceptual Error
In this case it has shown the false –consensus effect. As the Gilman has overestimated the extent for which the Rochelle had made the characteristics and beliefs which is similar to his own. In the case of Gilman he assumed that Rochelle would be happy and welcomes this career position transfer in the marketing research coordinator and falsely interpreted Rochelle non- verbal behaviors as the evidence supporting to his assumption.
In this case self –fulfilling prophecy (SFP) may be seemed to be a relevant perceptual concept. So this SFP is always occurs when the expectation of the supervisor's about the employee influence the employee to act in such a way that it consistent with the initial expectation of the supervisor's. Although in this case we can see the positive response of the Gilman's towards the Rochelle, yet the final behaviors is that she thought of quitting the job.
