# Outside sources ARE NOT to be used in this essay. A “close reading” essay means that you are to form your own interpretation of the material.
# See your Writing about Literature booklet if you need help. The new 6th edition of A Writer’s Reference by Diana Hacker has a section about writing about literature in the back of it.
# Remember that you must use MLA conventions for the in-text citations and the Works Cited page. Short stories use page numbers and signal phrases for the author’s name. Online sources for stories will not have page numbers and so are not required. See MLA rules.
# Remember to use third person and present tense when appropriate, do not use second person unless it is a part of directly quoted material, etc.
