Nando Pelusi's article, " Parents and Children in Conflict" is a nontraditional view about
The assumed unconditional love between parents and their children. He points out that no one
can fully give that kind of love-and they aren't supposed to according to evolution . His claims
that this creates a struggle between the children that crave attention and the parents that crave
a break; furthermore, he states that this is what possibly leads adolescence to the use of drugs,
alcohol, and attempted suicide for their parents attention.
I had never before believed that my parents needed or wanted to do anything more than
love and care for me as a child , and then I grew up. I realize now that my parents are amazing
for giving up as much as they did for me. I can also understand other children I knew as a child
whose parents were often bitter , and even worse , uncaring. I expect that some resentment
comes along with parenting, and I think that if young adults were given this information they
too would have a better understanding of their parents struggle. This revelation could perhaps
steer them away from things such as teen pregnancy and addiction , and maybe bring them
closer to their own parents.
I can also see the points he made about children participating in negative activities in
the struggle for their parents attention. I remember as a youngster giving my parents nightmares
with all the antics I pulled. I don't think children realize the drama is for parental attention.
