Speech Comm. 100A

Instructor: Craig Fowler

Assignment 3: Persuasive Speeches (30% of grade)

Your assignment should you choose to accept it (not that you get all that much say in the matter, I suppose...) is to present a persuasive speech, of between six and eight minutes in length, making use of a visual aid. There will be a question and answer session of around four minutes following the speech.

The speech should seek to influence the audience whether by seeking to change the audience's beliefs, attitudes or opinions; or by calling to action. The three typical areas on which persuasive speeches focus are issues of fact (e.g., convincing the audience of an objective fact, such as 'who shot JFK'?), value (e.g., Is euthanasia morally permissible?), or policy (e.g., What should be done to provide adequate health care for people living in the U.S.A.?)

The outline should be completed on the outline sheet I will distribute via email. When you give a speech, you should have only a key word outline with you as you present.

References also need to be provided in standard APA format. The number of citations required is a minimum of five (AND REMEMBER, THESE MUST BE CITED WITHIN THE BODY OF YOUR SPEECH IN ADDITION TO BEING INCLUDED IN YOUR REFERENCES SECTION). However many internet sites you choose to use, they should not constitute more than half your references. By prior agreement, this requirement may be amended so that a greater proportion of citations may be drawn from the internet. However, in this case, it will need to be demonstrated that the sites are credible (for example, that they are suffixed '.org,' '.gov,' or '.edu' - '.coms' are viewed less favorably). However many internet sources are used, at least two of the citations must be from printed material.

Chapter 13 and 14 in Osborne and Osborne are specifically concerned with persuasive speeches and enhancing their effectiveness, and should be considered required reading for this assignment.
