All hail to the United States of America; the greatest country in the world. What makes our society the beacon of light for all the world to wonder in, is the beauty of one simple fact. That fact is that each person has the right of freedom to choose their own destiny in life. Though there are certain freedoms in modern day society that poses a major threat to the foundations that have made this great country what it is today. One such freedom is the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States as of June 26, 2015. Same sex marriage should not be legal in the United States because it is detrimental to traditional institutions such as family, marriage and is morally not right. Overall, by accepting this hostile sexual behavior as the norm we are destroying the core values that built this great country.

First of all, the same sex marriage movement has been around since the 1960’s (Koppelman, 2006). It has recently picked up steam since the 1980’s (Koppelman, 2006). Specifically those in favor of gay marriage argue that their freedom to choose and marry who they wish are being violated. Those people who are in against say that marriage of such is a violation of the natural law of marriage. Which is to create family and build a stable society in the process.

Also the family unit is the most important aspect of society. The traditional structure of American families with a mother and father as the head of the household has been the cornerstone of success in this great society. In fact, this natural balancing of family has been essential to the development of the U.S., because it lays the groundwork for the process of proper socialization in society. This well-known ground-work is cemented in the teachings of social norms, right from wrong, moral & ethical standards.

More importantly, the family unit has been a template for all that makes American society great. Though the beginning of gay marriage threatens to destroy this great pillar of society. According to Lawrence Wilson, the family union between a man and a woman living together is the basic unit of social organization for any society (2013). This form of social organization is known to provide stability not only for the family unit but for society as a whole. Besides, according to Wilson, when families are strong society is also strong and vice-versa (2013). Overall, the family unit is the most important unit in society and by legalizing same-sex marriage it not only weakens the unit but also society as a whole.

Marriage is a sacred institution of society. It is also a symbol of American culture, particularly between a man and a woman who share a common bond of love. Marriage also has a specific purpose in society as described by TFP Student Action, the purpose of marriage is to grow the human race and raising their offspring (n.d.). It is true that homosexual couples can have and raise children but study suggest that children raised by couples as such are fair much worse in life than children raised by heterosexual couples (TFP Student Action n. d.).

Furthermore, gay marriage takes away from the true principle of marriage in society which is to procreate (Family Research Council n. d.).  Legalizing gay marriage would reduce marriage irrelevant in a sense because the couple cannot have children of their own. Overall, marriage between a man and a woman is widely viewed as the most productive way to raise children and build a stable society, “marriage promotes stability for adults and children and helps individuals lead happier and more productive lives” (Strasser, 1999, p. 2). According to Richard F. Duncan, there is no such thing as gay marriage because marriage is a union between a man and a woman (Gertsmann p. 23).

Most importantly, legalizing gay marriage is a moral crime. In fact, the main complaint to this sinful form of sexual behavior is that it is not right in the eyes of the people but most of all God. If God wanted for man to be with man then he would have never created women. Instead he created Eve to help Adam populate the world. Imagine if Adam or Eve or were gay then there would be no people on earth and the world as we know it today would not exist. In fact, in the bible there is the story of Sodom and Gomorrah where God took wrath against the cities because of the sin of homosexuality. There is also a famous verse in the bible that says “…man shall leave his father and mother; and shall cleave to his wife.” (Mark 10: 6-7). This basic fact of life furthermore reveals that gay marriage is a sin of society and should be opposed by all those who believe in the moral right.
