Friction Lab

Planning A

My experiment was to test some aspect of friction. I chose to investigate a portion of static friction were two masses were connected by a piece of string. The bigger mass will be at a degree angle while the smaller mass will be hanging vertically over the side of the incline. My hypothesis is that the static friction will be .18. I will show you an example of my experiment with a picture. Mass 1 will represent the smaller mass while Mass 2 will be the larger of the masses.

Planning B

I placed the incline at a 25o angle, and I choose to clean it of any residue. Then I placed a 500 gram weight on the incline that was attached to a rope that had a 200 gram weight that was counteracting it. The 200 gram weigh was hanging vertically over the side of the incline attached by a rope that went through a pulley which was attached to the other mass. I made sure that neither of the blocks was moving because I wanted to investigate the form of static friction.

The controlled variables are my degree angle of the incline, my mass less and friction less pulley and mass less and friction less string, and my two masses.

Data Collection

Mass 1= 200 Grams

Mass 2= 500 Grams

Degree angle= 25 Degrees

Data Analysis

Acceleration=0

M2* 9.8 -FT=MA (FG*sin25)-FT-f=MA or 0

M2* 9.8=FT (2070.82)- (u*4440.9)-1960=0

200*9.8=FT (u*4440.9)=110.82

1960=Ft u=.024

Evaluation

My hypothesis was incorrect and it was incorrect by a very drastic number. It seems that in this experiment that the friction didn't play a huge role in making the net force zero. It seems that two weights basically counteracted each
