Many people have had a fear of flights even before the September 11th attack. Before then peoples schema had already developed it could have just been from seeing a plane crash on television or because of the plane crashes due to technical difficulties. Technical difficulties would have mean that the plane crash was an accident which was the case for a majority of plane crashes. When the news stations were covering the story after the first attack they were referring to it as being an accident. Since the majority of plane crashes had been from technical difficulties in the past than most people just assumed that it was an accident. This is also considered to be assimilation. According to our text book assimilation occurs when people use their existing schemes to deal with new information and experiences into account. When the second plane hit the towers that's when people started to realize that this was not an accident. Now this was referred to as an attack. This was something that Americans were not familiar with. Accommodation was being taken into effect at this time. According to the text book accommodation occurs when people adjust their schemes to take new information and experiences into account.
