8. What is the relation of reforms in rhythm and harmony to be the reforms in speeches?

The relation between rhythm and harmony to the improvement in speeches is that melody is composed of three things speech, harmonic mode, and rhythm. Speech doesn’t differ from speech that’s sung up to now as it must be spoken according to the same models. The harmonic mode and rhythm must follow the speech. Therefore, a poet who speech contains this characteristics in his speeches will touch the inner most souls of many.Ð' Ð' Ð'

9. Why according to Socrates, is education in music of greatest importance in the guardian’s education?

Socrates says for the guardians to become sovereign in music they must understand the virtue in music. He also, states that guardians will never be musical.Ð' The importance of music is that rhythm and harmony speaks to the soul and can make a man most graceful if he is correctly backed if not, the opposite. For the guardians to become most sovereign they must understand that they will not be perfect in speech if he denies the graceful and ugly with out understanding that they are akin. Once understood the guardian will reach mastery.Ð'

The ultimate purpose of education in music is to be able to recognize that virtue is in themselves which is in their image, but believing that they all belong to the same art and discipline. In the education to be a guardian he must recognize the form of moderation, courage, liberality and magnificence. To acquire this characters’ one can not help to gain knowledge in the process. Ð'

11. What kind of medicine is to be practiced among the guardians in the city, and why?

Doctors should be trained to treat the healthy, who suffer from a single, curable ailment. They should not be trained to deal with the chronically ill. Those suffering from an incurable physical disease should be left to die naturally. Those suffering from an incurable mental disease should actively be put to death.Ð'

12. Why must the education of judges differ from that of doctors, according to Socrates?
