Post Civil War

The influence of big business played a key role before the civil war in the United States. Industries cultivated expressively in impact, quantity, and size. The power large corporations had were absolutely habitually negative. Employees had to work in horrific conditions under ruthless bosses, while they were treated like zombies. This goes for men and women. It is important to know that while the big businesses thrived, wealthy men gained control from the poor, who in turn suffered. Many of the workers wanted less hours, earn more pay, and have better working space. The big businesses were a crucial illustration of greed and power-hungriness. Moreover, it can be effortlessly said that big industries developed to have major effects on the economics and politics of the United States, particularly between the period of 1870 and 1900.

In the beginning of the 1870s the prices of items were highly priced aiming towards the upper-class. As machines began to mass produce standardized commodities, manufacture costs reduced and goods became more reasonably priced for those from supplementary social classes. Likewise, corporations started to grow ominously. The rapid expansions of big business were increasing in amount, extent, and control. One of the many new trades that were front runners was department stores. Department stores primarily fascinated women. As more women ventured into the city they began seeking jobs in other escalating companies. By the end of the 1890s, roughly one million women entered the workforce as seamstresses, secretaries, telephone operators, and bookkeepers. Also, teaching and nursing were among the few communally adequate inclinations for middle and upper-class women. (J, A, I)

Although many people were employed there were serious problems going on in the work place. For one thing employees had to work twelve hours, limited breaks and little pay. They were comparable to machines. Working with no end repetitively, making products for them to provide a living for their families. Instead of having a fair system workers were given low wages that can easily be said were patronizing. This made it hard for just one person to work so someone else would work to provide money for the family. With more people at work in the factories there was over crowding causing workforces to be in perilous conditions. Even though these conditions were treacherous people continued to work. No matter how problematic it may have been individuals had no choice but to cooperate and deal with the appalling circumstances. (G, F)
