Presidential Candidates 2016

Every four years the United States have to select a president to rule the country. The requirements for the Office of President are1. Natural born citizen or a citizen of the United States, 2. Be at least 35 years old, 3. Fourteen years of residency within the United States. The rules were amended on February 27, 1951 to add that the President can only hold office for 2 terms. Primary elections are the six-month long process in which Republicans and Democrats choose their nominees for presidency. Individual primaries are held statewide to elect the candidate between each party along the way. A caucus meeting is the same as a primary however, the processing is different. Voters get together locally around the state to sway their neighbors before the votes are casted.

We started out with 23 candidates. These are the republican candidate that dropped out: Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Jim Gilmore, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, Rick Santorum, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Lindsey Graham, Bobby Jindal, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, John Bolton, Scott Walker, George Pataki. Democrats that dropped out Martin O’Malley, Lawrence Lessing, Lincoln Chafee, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Independents that dropped out: Michael Bloomberg, Jim Webb.   As of today we have Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, Jesse Ventura, Jill Stein, and Gary Johnson, as presidential candidates. Hillary Clinton, Democrat, and Donald Trump, Republican, are the front runners in this election period.

The Republican Party candidates have to race to 1,237 delegates. Donald Trump has a little over 600 so far.  Ted Cruz has about 4oo delegates and John Kasich has close to 200 delegates. Trump has won 18 states out of the total 30 primaries. Cruz has won 8, which included his home state of Texas. Rubio had only won 3 primaries but dropped out soon after Trump won Florida his home state. John Kasich has only won Ohio, his home state. Many people are still trying to figure out how an outsider like Donald Trump is winning the debates. Some are even questioning his ability to be a credible candidate. Donald trump is endorsed by Ben Carson and Chris Christie, whom both dropped out.
