Sigmund Freud believed that personality was set in early childhood. His theory of personality is called psychoanalytic or psychodynamic theory.
Freud's theories were prevalent for many years, influencing art, literature and culture. Yet today his work is highly controversial, and most psychologists do not agree with him.
Freud thought that the subconscious, the parts of our minds that are not conscious, consisted of three parts.
The first part is the id, which consists of instincts. The id is what a person wants to do. It is propelled by the pleasure principle and wants immediate gratification.
The second part is the ego, which is the rational part of the subconscious. The ego is what a person could do. It is led by the reality principle and seeks to gratify what the id wants in realistic ways.
The third part, the superego, is the voice of conscience. It deals with what someone should do.
