Richard Branson Hates Public Speaking -- Here's How He Gets Over It
“have a chitchat with somebody. […] I don’t use any notes or cards; I just speak from the heart”.
Richard is a famous man; he is also a developer of company. The fact that he is scared to present and has these life hacks to get over all the symptoms of stage fright. He has many life hacks, the one that appealed most to me, is that making a speech a less trivial topic by making it more of a social interaction helps monitor your stress during speeches. When I get nervous I start to read directly from my notes. Thus, this is really relatable to me and I attempted to do this in one of my tutorial classes and it helped immensely.
English 191, “Introduction to Rhetoric
“Medieval educators saw rhetoric primarily as the art of preaching […] The scholastics were obsessed with logic and syllogistic reasoning, all men are mortal, Socrates is a man, Socrates is mortal”.
I liked how in this video they compared rhetoric in medieval times in the Athens as well as the present, at first the video gave us a historical background on rhetoric and how Socrates incorporated it. The part of the video that appealed to me the most is that rhetoric is a type of preaching. Socrates, someone that was deemed to being a demigod, was referred to as mortal by the scholastics, since it is logical explanation and helped prove their point at the time.
University of Maryland, Baltimore Writing Center,
“your work is going to have a goal […] you need to have it in mind and write, keep in mind whose gonna read about […] what counts as evidence.”
The university of Baltimore video used a great deal or animations to keep the audience engaged. The use of humor captivated the audience. The part in the video that caught my attention was the part about the goals. We should make a goal and keep that goal in our heads as we write, and we should ask many critical questions that help keep you on track.
Lars Sudan’s advice “On Public Speaking”
“Introduce the elephant in the room”
Sudman’s a really talented public speaker, his use of voice modulation and pacing kept the audience captivated. He gave a lot of useful information, such as introducing the elephant as in; if you have an accident before a presentation or if anything is wrong just introducing it and tell the audience, so that way the audience will know what’s wrong and during the presentation they will ignore the problem and continue listening to the presentation and this will give you a sense of relief as well.
“Do not try to mind read your audience”
he also said not to mind read your audience, which is one of the predominant triggers of stage fright that the audience doesn’t care or that they are bored, don’t mind it, forget about what they are thinking. Just focus on the presentation itself.
3 ways to speak English” by Jamila Licit
“Now you may think that it is ignorant to speak broken English, But I’m here to tell you that even “articulate” Americans sound foolish to the British”
“I know that I had to borrow your language because mines was stolen, but you can’t expect me to speak your history wholly while mines is broken, these words are spoken, by someone who is simply fed up with the Eurocentric ideals of this season”.
