A Raisin In The Sun: Social And Historical Context
A Raisin in the Sun was one of the first plays that presented viewers with a true realistic description of an African Americans life. It was one of the first plays to describe black characters, themes and conflicts in an unbiased and true manner. The author of the plays name was Lorraine Hansberry, she was the only black writer and youngest playwright at that point to win the New York's Drama Critics Circle Award. She wanted to educate people to the African struggles that go along with living in America.
A Raisin in the Sun could be known as a crucial document and turning point in American history. The play was presented at such a time when, racial tension and the stereotypes of Black Americans were very disturbing. The play gave a public voice on this opinion.
A Raisin in the Sun still remains a crucial piece of art during a very biased time in American history. All of the tension about race and gender comes down to a single point, dreams a crucial. Im not saying that Hansberry's play stopped racism but I am sure that it opened up people's eyes and gave them another view to base their opinions with.
