Response of Americans and Filipinos to Hurricane Sandy and typhoon Sendong
The way Philippines and Americans respond to typhoons is different because at first they are different countries. As we compare this two distant lands, the factors will affect the way they respond to disasters are there economic, social, culture and experiences.
Economic factor is one of the factors that will affect people response. As a country, America has great economic development. As a result, they can act earlier before the typhoon arrives as it was shown on the preparedness of the American Red Cross on helping the victims of the calamities. What is striking most is that they have sophisticated rescue mediums like ambulance, helicopters, boats, etc. But in the Philippines, as belong to intermediate country, it's a vague idea in preparedness of the Philippines, lacking of sophisticated vehicles and slow act of rescuers.
If we go to social development, Philippines will get the points. Philippines is known for rich in community building. Whether typhoons come, Filipinos still get help from each other even they see no hope. Meanwhile in the America, Americans get frustrated even the flood level is only up to their legs. They get panicked when calamities come and they are very dependent to the service of the government. They expect that they will be help by the government and they can't make their own mind.
Culture also affects the response to calamities. Americans are accustomed to eat-sleep lifestyle. They focus on their profession and they live with relaxation. As a result, they fell frightened when calamities come. In the Philippines, most of us work hard and experience hardships, so we are immune to such devastating wrath of nature.
Experiences are one of the important factors on how to respond a critical situation like calamities. As Philippines located at Pacific Ocean, same with America located both Pacific and Atlantic, it easily prone to storm depressions but more on the Philippines. As Philippines frequently visit by storms, we get more experience about typhoons. We get more knowledge on how to deal with calamities. Precautionary measures for example can help people to prepare from calamities. As a developed country, Americans focused more on things than preparing themselves from calamities.
