I have been challenged in many ways since I joined the United States Navy; however I wanted and needed a new beginning. I have been thinking about making a change in my life, a change of pace so to speak. After years of being out of high school, I have finally decided to go to college. Once I return to school I will have several benefits and many obstacles for me to overcome.
There are several reasons that lead me to make the decision to go to college. I will need a good job when I get out of the Navy; something that would keep me from falling on my face and would make me happy. With my decision I thought about what would I like to do, where would I like to go, and what would make me happy? I looked into several professions (such as a nursing, an accounting, and teaching); I choose to become a history teacher. Teaching history I feel is to be my passion; I have always have been good with children whether they were an infant or ten years old. In order for me to get my Bachelor’s degree in Education I must first complete an Associate’s degree. I am going to Ashford University in the pursuit of my Associate’s Degree in Business. If I am out of the Navy before I complete my Bachelor’s, this degree will give me the opportunity to have a very good job while I am finishing my degree.
There are many obstacles ahead of me that I must overcome. I have been in the Navy for about five years now; it’s a very demanding job, which requires me to be on call twenty-four-seven. When they say “It’s time to go” I have to go, no questions asked. The access to the internet at work is limited due to the small number of computers and the larger amount of people on board the ship. Also, while the ship is out at sea I only have a specific time that I am allowed to get on to the internet. On top of that the connection is slower than dial-up, due to the fact that the more important equipment is using the bandwidth. It is an irritating process when I am trying to do my school work because everyone wants to use the computer and they only care about themselves.
Procrastination, I believe, is one of the major problems with students in high school and college. What can I say, I am a procrastinator; I have been since I could remember. I am not saying that it is a good quality to have but unless you can admit that you have a problem than you can not attempt to fix it. If I am interested in what I am told to do than I am all over it; however I tend to put off things, especially if I really do not want to do them. I am very adamant about making decisions; I do not like making mistakes, I do not want to look at my life and think that I shouldn’t have done or said that. Procrastination and self-doubt are my biggest personal problems that I have to overcome
I had a discussion with my mother before I started school about how was I going to be able to manage the obstacles that I would encounter with the pursuit of my education.
