Review of The Great Gatsby
By Raphael
In surface, The Great Gatsby described a relationship between two men and a woman, and how the normal man finally became the super-rich. But actually it much more than just that. As I got some further comprehension of this novel, can also felt the happiness for Gatsby finally became that he wants and achieve his dream one day although it ruined so fast. Sometimes their concepts of love can dramatically touch my heart, meanwhile makes me felt so pity for Gatsby. But whatever use which kind of judgement to consider about this novel, should never think without it’s background, and what that story meant.
What is the American Dream? And what the Jazz Age is? Those question makes me confused a lot during my reading until I search them. Here is the result of my research, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth (from Wikipedia). There are a major premise for this inspiring sentence, is that the equalization of opportunity.
This novel write in the first decade of great depression of American. This period called Jazz Age because the population of Jazz music among white American. Several years before Jazz age got great social mobility, that’s why people like Gatsby achieve that height. The story of Gatsby is established in that generation, “All the gods are dead, and all the war is over, the faith of everyone is tottering”.
In order to achieve his American Dream, Gatsby even willing to get on with Wolfsheim, the gangster. Get rich suddenly by selling alcohol illegally, instead of hardworking, earn every coin form his sweat (as he planned in his childhood), that how the typically American Dream achieves. He not only contrary to the society, but also betray his originally intention, that the totally change happened on him, just for wealth and famous, meanwhile the love of Daisy, that what makes him became a illegal businessman.
But anyhow, the reality is so cruel sometimes, whatever he does, he still can’t get into the class like Tom and the old rich in the East Egg, and can’t get Daisy’s heart. That probably could blame on the real background that Gatsby got. No matter how he hides and how he conceal his past to makes seems mysterious and makes people worship him he still can’t change his past, that influenced him to get in to the higher social class, although he spent tons of money on holding party, but those people who came to the party don’t actually want to get on with him, they just want to be admire and be famous through Gatsby’s party. Almost none of them came from the actually top class. For those reason he could never be the people which be respect as the gentlehood.
