This movie on Schizophrenia relates a lot with what we are currently doing in class, because we are talking about Schizophrenia and everything that comes along with it. It was really surprising to hear that only 10% of people with Schizophrenia will need to be hospitalized throughout their lives, I always thought it was around 30% or higher. It was also really shocking to hear that only 1% of Americans will develop Schizophrenia in their lifetime, I know that 1% of Americans is still a lot of people, and I always knew that Schizophrenia was very rare, but I always thought it would have been more than just 1%.
There were a couple of things that we went over in class that also showed up on the movie. One of those being, the two types of onsets: chronic and acute. The other piece of information that we went over in class that was also one the movie was the three different types of symptoms that can lead to the diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Those three symptoms include: delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thoughts/speech.
It was really scary, and really sad when in the movie the guy, Leslie, was talking about his auditory hallucinations. It’s really scary to hear about people actually having these kinds of hallucinations, because if they listen to them, they can easily be put into a dangerous situation. For example, with Leslie, he easily could have died from falling out of the window, just because the voice in his head told him to.
It was also really sad to see Jeff, the guy with a pretty bad case of disorganized speech. At first, when he had to repeat the sentences the psychologist was saying, we was doing pretty well вЂ" since the sentences were pretty short. However, as time passed and the sentences got longer and longer, Jeff could not memorize the sentences. For the most part, he could repeat the beginning and end parts of the sentence with little errors, but he jumbled up the words in the middle a lot.
In my A.P. Psychology class, that I took last year, I had to do a project on Schizophrenia, so I knew most of the information that we have talked about in class, and that I saw on the movie. So I know a lot of information about Schizophrenia, the way they act, talk, think, etc. but it’s completely different to actually see these things. I, personally, have never met someone with Schizophrenia, but just watching them in that movie was completely different from anything
