Shangh Shangh and the Bully
Mediator: Hello, my name is Desiree, and I am the mediator and this Zhuo he will also be a mediator today.
Shangh Shangh: My name is Shangh Shangh
Rodney: My name is Rodney Peeks
Mediator: Shangh Shangh and Rodney, I welcome you both to the mediation center. Mediation is a communication process in which the two of you will work together, with my assistance, cooperating to help resolve your conflict. For mediation to work there are ground rules to follow. First, I must remain neutral I will not take sides. Mediation is private-I will not talk about your problem with other students. Each of you will take turns talking, and when one talks, the other students listen. Last, you are expected to cooperate to solve the problem. Shangh Shangh, do you agree to mediate and follow the rules?
Shangh Shangh. Yes.
Mediator: Rodney, do you agree to mediate and to follow the rules?
Rodney: Ok!
Mediator: Shangh Shangh, tell me your point of view.
Shangh Shangh: Rodney and I got into an argument in the hallway while I was on my way to class. I got very upset with Rodney because he told me to go back to my home land so I threw my notebook at him. Then he pushed me on the floor and I got up and punched him in his face. That’s when Ms. Lindsey saw us and she suspended me. I never fight anyone I just got really upset with him, I lost control.
Mediator: you were upset and threw your book at Rodney. He pushed you and then you punched him. Now when Shangh Shangh got suspended Rodney what did you think about that?
Rodney: She shouldn’t have got that upset it was just a joke!
Shangh Shangh: I did not find that funny that was an insult.
Mediator: Shangh Shangh its Rodney’s turn to talk. Please don’t interrupt. Now Rodney by saying this joke did you intend to make Shangh Shangh laugh?
Rodney: Well, yeah. I didn’t mean for it to come across hurtful. I do apologize if you took it the wrong way.
Mediator: Shangh Shangh do you accept Rodney’s apology. Is there anything else you want to add?
Shangh Shangh: Rodney should think about what he says because words do hurt.
Mediator: So Shangh Shangh you would like for Rodney to think about other peoples feelings when he makes his jokes.
Shangh Shangh: Yes, that’s what I want.
Mediator: Rodney, do you have anything else to add?
Rodney: No.
Mediator: Shangh Shangh do you throwing a book Rodney will help him not to tell those type of jokes?
Shangh Shangh: No, I guess not.
Mediator: Rodney what do you want?
Rodney: I want her to stop getting so angry.
Mediator: You don’t want Shangh Shangh to be mad at you. Rodney, if Shangh Shangh said something like that to you would you be upset.
Rodney: I would be upset. I really do apologize for hurting your feelings.
Mediator: Would you like to be Rodney’s friend Shangh Shangh?
Shangh Shangh: I wouldn’t mind being Rodney’s friend only if he promises to not say jokes like that.
Mediator: It sounds like you both want to be friends. Now I want you both to think about what you can do to help solve your problem. We’ll make a list of possible solutions by brainstorming. The rules for brainstorming are to say any ideas that come to mind, even unusual ideas. Do not judge or discuss the ideas, and look for as many ideas as possible that might satisfy both of you. Ready? What can you do to solve this problem?
Rodney: I could maybe make up different jokes?
Shangh Shangh: Maybe I could help you make up some new jokes?
Mediator: What else can you both do to solve the problem?
Shangh Shangh: Maybe I could find different ways to express my
