Americans drink 6.3 billion gallons of coffee, 2.3 billion gallons of tea and an astounding 15.3 billion gallons of pop in 2003. Many Americans have trouble getting to sleep at night. Maybe because of disease, schedules or even age, people are getting less and less sleep. You should ask for a sleep evaluation, lighten your schedule or talk with your teenager to get to sleep better.

Some people can't get to sleep because of certain diseases. Insomnia is a disease where people can't sleep until the early hours of the day. When normal people get out of bed the insomniac is in a deep sleep. Narcolepsy causes a person to become incredibly sleepy very suddenly and they often fall asleep in the middle of the task they are doing. This is very dangerous for them and people around them if they are in a car. Sleep Apnea is a condition in which the air passages get blocked during sleep. The people with this condition are always asleep when he stops breathing. People with this condition don't get good nights sleep because people breathe once every minute and a half. People with any of these conditions are strongly urged to check themselves into a hospital and request a sleep evaluation.

Students and adults work and party and they normally get home very late. Most get home too late and they are forced to get up early for school or work. They get home and go to sleep, and then can't get to sleep at night, in a chain reaction their entire schedule is screwed up and that causes a problem. Some people need caffeine or stimulants to stay awake in the morning. This could cause hypertension and other diseases and therefore decreases overall health. A solution to this problem would be to talk to your boss and rearrange your work schedule. You could talk to your school and ask them to have sports and extracurricular activities a little earlier and you could party less. You could stop drinking so much pop or coffee and stop smoking and drinking. Caffeine and the ingredients in cigarettes can make you stay up. Don't eat too much late at night but if you have a light snack that can help you sleep even better. Also you could change your schedule and have a quiet environment one hour from bed time.

Age can be a problem because when a boy becomes a teenager the nightly release of a certain chemical is delayed one or two hours so the teenager can't fall asleep until 11:00 or 12:00 at night. Because of
