Stating the Facts
Ever since the attacks on America in 2011 our military have been fighting continuously to ensure that we remain a safe and free country. Mental illnesses within the military have always been an issue but more so since 9/11. Mental illnesses within the military got Crosby Hipes of the University of Maryland, wondering if the reasons why mental illnesses within the military are at an all time high; because other soldiers perceived them as being weak for seeking treatment.
The research report titled "The Stigma of Mental Health Treatment in the
Military: An Experimental Approach," is a report done to conduct information on military persons who seek treatment for mental illnesses and how they perceive others. He basis this research on the thought that those who are part of the military are strong and not known as weak. He gives 563 soldiers of all ranks, ages, education, martial status, and races a questionnaire based on what he thought would define if one of the three hypotheses were correct. He set up both independent and dependent variables. In his analysis, he finds that one of his hypotheses was correct in that being other soldiers did find soldiers week when seeking treatment for a mental illness. The other one he found was not true. Soldiers seeking help out of a group-centric setting did not effect whether or not they perceived them being weak for seeking treatment.
In the research report we learn that it in inductive research. He uses specific observations to suggest generalizations such as his background readings on other research into the way people feel in groups and standing alone and those who perceive soldiers and officers as being weak for seeking treatment (page 1). His generalizations produce a tentative theory. His theory is that, in the military, individuals who seek mental health treatment may be stereotyped and isolated as weak individuals (page 2). He also sets up three hypotheses to conduct his research on his theory (pages 2 & 3). The researcher also uses quantitative research based on data. He sets up a table showing the demographic information of the group of soldiers that he is testing (page 4). The independent and dependent variables are also listed. He shows the results in a paragraph form and in another data table (page 7). He then gives his conclusion stating on what he found and things that effected the results (page 7). I feel that all the steps were taken in the correct way for social scientific research as I have stated above on the pages listed.
The way the researcher analyzed his data was in a questionnaire that he gave to all of the 563 soldiers. He asked them a series of questions on their race, sex, age, highest grade completed, year's
