Case Study Analysis
In this case study we look at Carl Robins and all the problems he faces as new recruiter at ABC, Inc. Carl has only been working for ABC, Inc. for six months. This was his first time doing any recruitment. In spite of his lack of experience, he has just recruited 15 new trainees for Monica Carrolls, the Operations Supervisor. Because of his lack of experience, no communication, and no organization, he has run into several problems before the trainees have even gone through orientation. He must prioritize and handle things in a timely manner. Carl must figure out a plan to correct these problems and finish out his first recruitment with his head held high.
Background
Carl has had sufficient time to get everything ready for the orientation. Instead he was unorganized, had poor planning, and no execution. This is either due to the fact that he is not qualified for the job or has not been properly trained to perform these tasks. Carl Robins is a new campus recruiter for ABC, Inc. In April he recruited 15 new trainees for Monica Carrolls who is the Operations Supervisor. Carl's goal was to have all 15 new hires through orientation and ready to work by July. Monica had contacted him mid-April about the training schedule, orientation, manuals, drug tests and all the other information needed to be done. Carl told her that everything would be completed on time and everything was on track. This is his first recruitment effort and has only been on the new job for six months. He has had several bumps in the road before orientation and is not ready. Even though he is new this is no excuse for not be prepared to accomplish this task given to him. He is a new hire as well as the others coming in. He should make a good impression and show them how important it is to perform well even when you are new.
The main problem is that there are multiple things that are not finished and time is running out. He needs to re-evaluate things, prioritize, and figure out a solution to things as quickly as possible. There are still a lot of things that need to be done but can still be accomplished before the original July deadline.
Key Problems
The major problem or concern seems to be that Carl is not qualified or does not have enough training to be put in this position of recruitment. He should not have taken on such a big task after only being in this position for only six months. Some of the other key problems are:
1. Some of the new trainees did not have applications completed or their transcripts on file.
2. None of the applicants had been sent to take a drug screen.
3. There are only three copies of the employee manual. Their needs to be at least 15 to accommodate every new hire. There are also several pages missing from the three copies they do have.
4. The room that was reserved for the new hire orientation has already been booked by another employee for the whole month of June for a computer training seminar.
All of these problems must be addressed and resolved immediately to make sure the new hire orientation can take place in time.
Alternatives
There could be several possible alternatives to fix Carl's problem. One alternative would be to push the training date to a later date so he could have more time to prepare and get things in order. He would have more time to copy manuals and make sure all the pages are there. He would also be able to rebook the room for a time when no one else has already reserved it. The trainees could get all their paperwork done, drug screening done, and get their transcripts on file. This would be option number one. Another possible solution could be to have someone come in and help him finish out the job. Maybe he needs an assistant to help him out until he gets use to the work he will be doing at his new job. By having an assistant to help him he could formulate a plan and delegate small tasks out to his assistant to get done while he focuses on the bigger things needing done. He would be able to make his start date of July with the help of someone else. He might not like asking for help but as long as the job gets done it should not matter. The best solution would be to put in extra hours at the office and making a to-do list trying to get things figured out. By working late, extra hours, or coming in early he could show that he is dedicated to his new job an d that he will not give up just because a few things went wrong. This is the best option because he can show to everyone that he did not give up or screw up the deadline. This will show how hard he can work and how hard he is willing to work to keep his new job. The other options would not be the best because if he pushes the orientation date back further this will mess with everyone's schedule. Others may have already planned around the original date. The company might be planning
