Movie Title: Invictus
Summary:
A man, Nelson Mandela, who had spent his 27 years in jail, had been democratically elected as the first black President of South Africa. He faces huge challenges during his presidency, especially the racial divisions between black and white South Africans which concerned him the most. In a Rugby World Cup between the country’s team (Springboks) and England, the President noticed that blacks in the country support the opponent team since mostly-white Springboks represent prejudice and apartheid in their minds. Nelson Mandela decided to take the chance to unite and inspire the nation through the 1995 Rugby World Cup held in South Africa. He first persuades the newly black-dominated South Africa Sports Committee to support Springboks, and next meeting the captain of Springboks rugby team, Francois Pienaar, for the purpose of telling him victory of country’s team bring unite and inspire the nation. “Invictus”, a poem shared by Mandela to Pienaar for the purpose of inspiring. As a result, the whole country comes together to support the Springboks and Mandela’s effort. The president has successfully united the nation.
From the story, we had discovered several important organizational behaviors, which are:
- Workplace conflict and stress management
As a captain, Francois Pienaar was stressful when their team loses the game with England. As we know that stressors include any environmental conditions that place a physical or emotional demand on a person. One of the stressor is low task control, which believe that Pienaar most probably has faced conflict since there is uncooperative and under control teammates. Lastly, he managed to lead the team to success after receiving inspiration from the president.
- Effective Leadership
The President showed us the effective leadership in how he lead his nation, how he treat everyone around him, how he respected by others because of his sincerity in leading and the power of uniting the nation.
- Motivation and performance management
Nelson Mandela inspires Pienaar with the poem “Invictus” to motivate and lead him to the success. With his effort, he successfully motivates the team, Springboks and build an effective teamwork which lead them to the victory in the world cup.
