To make operations more sustainable following objectives need to be met. These include minimising congestion, making better use of the transport infrastructure, minimising pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, managing development pressures on the landscape, and reducing noise and disturbance from freight movements. This need to be done to promote initiatives of the department of transport due to sustainability involves the development of ensuring better quality of life for everyone, now and generations to come. Higher living standards are needed to be made while achieving the economic growth and protecting the environment.

Road cannot be just be used to distribute and deliver its products as this would help to build up bottlenecks and therefore integrated transport infrastructure is needed where road, rail, inland waterways, coastal shipping, ports and airports all needed to be considered. This is needed to be done to help cut down 20% of greenhouse commissions which the government is intending to do. An aspect which has not received much attention in the past is the economic growth while reducing accidents, pollution, noise and congestion needs to be included within the operations to help meet the initiatives of the department of transport.

The scope of empty running and light running remains significant therefore it needs to be reduced. It cannot be totally eliminated but measures can be taken by using the full capacity of vehicles which can be used to deliver and considering return loads. This would comply with promoting the department of transport initiatives but also reducing costs for the company making operations more sustainable and reducing the number of noise pollution, congestion, health problem and accidents.

Within the brundtland report it states that non-renewable resources are being used and renewable resources are being downgraded. Part of the operations alternative resources need to be looked at and used if possible, in order to help sustain better living standards for the public. E.g. environmentally friendly diesel being used instead of normal diesel. Government is thinking of introducing new policy where polluter should pay for any environmental damage caused with the increases in taxes for using roads and possibly introduction of road pricing policy.
