ng with him. Another moment of bad luck happens when they get something really heavy on the fish hook and it starts tugging really hard, it turns out to be a shark. It lunges its way onto the boat and starts attacking one of the fishermen. It starts to bite the fisherman's leg and is trying to bite into it deeper. Meanwhile, the other fishermen are jabbing at it with their fish hooks and spears. The captain goes into his part of the ship and grabs a shotgun. He kills the shark and they throw it back into the ocean. But that's not all, while all their problems get resolved for that moment, they go back to catching fish, but their ice machine that keeps the fish cold, breaks. One of the fishermen takes a look at it, but cannot do anything about it because it was too old and they didn't get the part to fix it when they could. Therefore they have to return to shore to sell their swordfish before it spoils. The crew has a choice, whether to sail through a very powerful storm to get the money for their fish, or wait it out. They decide to risk it and go through the storm for the sake of selling the swordfish. However, between the Andrea Gail and Gloucester, Massachusetts, there are two powerful weather fronts and a hurricane. The Andrea Gail crew members don't know how big the storm is, so they underestimate it.
The other ships in the area have warned the ship to not go back. The ship loses its antenna in the middle of the warning from the other ship. It takes Linda Greenlaw of the sister ship Hannah Boden, to call in a Mayday. Also on the Hannah Boden, they are having problems. Their captain is trying to get them to withstand the strong blasts of the hurricane they are in and continue fishing. One of the crew members mentions it is her life that she has to rescue so she makes sure they get saved by a helicopter. An Air National Guard rescue helicopter in the area responds, they rescue them and drop them off by a local Coast Guard vessel that was close in the
area. Although, they were running low on fuel, so they tried to get a mid air fuel by a nearby plane, but failed. The crew of the helicopter had to ditch the aircraft before it had crashed. The crew members are split out randomly in the sea. All but one of them met up and got rescued by a nearby Coast Guard Ship, the Tamaroa.
