  • The patient Renada Daniel Patterson was born with a unhealthy kidney and was not well.
  • Her father decided to donate one of his kidneys to his daughter. He donated his kidney while he was in prison.
  • But unfortunately Renada’s body started rejecting the transplanted kidney.
  • So her father decided to give his second kidney to his daughter.
  • This can lead to serious illness to Mr. Patterson. He needs to be on dialysis for rest of his life and which is a poor substitute for his kidney and can faces many health risks.
  • This case got more complicated when the expense of the dialysis had to be carried out by the sate as Mr. Patterson was in prison.
  • There were many questions raised on this case.
  • How it is fair to keep the life into risk for others, when it is sure that after donating an organ he /she will be not as healthy as he/she is right now?
  • There were questions about the limit of altruism.
  • There were questions about the role of medicine in establishing those limits.
  • There was a question on the offer of Mr. Patterson of donating his only kidney to his daughter.
