Interest Group Report
The National Gay Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) is a dedicated organization focused on ending discrimination based on sexual orientation. Based on the facts found on "csuchico.edu" NGLTF is non-profit organization that challenges stereotypes and ensures equal justice under the law.
Created in 1973 and incorporated in 1974 NGLTF, also referred to as "The Task Force" was created to build roots of political power to win complete equality. Created and incorporated in New York the Task Force started immediately to challenge the American Psychiatric Associations classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 1975 the force rallied for the U.S Civil Service Commission to allow gay people to serve in government employment. The rally was successful.
The Task Force works to build complete equality by training local activists and leaders to strengthen campaigns. Using the community to build public support and create a world that respects human diversity and expression. The Force is the unwavering and uncompromising national voice that consistently raises the interconnections between homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, sexism, racism, and classism.
With it's headquarters in Washington DC the Task Force also has offices in Cambridge, New York, Los Angeles, Massachusetts, and Miami. The Task Force is a team of both gay and straight individuals ranging from all age groups. There is no specific number of members given by the Task Force, but with its many offices it wouldn't be difficult to assume a large turnout. Members are benefited with magazines informing them about upcoming events, parades and votes.
The major policy change the Task Force is working toward is same sex marriage. For years the Task Force has wanted the benefits of civil union and the rights and responsibilities of marriage. The Task Force has been on a constant battle to gain public support to protest the proposed amendment to the constitution that stated marriage was between a man and a woman. The Force is looking to influence congress to grant same-sex couples the right to civil marriage, with full local, state and federal recognition. Also with the immigration to the United States the Force is demanding that the country honor same sex marriages performed in other countries.
Another issue being fought by the Task Force is the right for aging homosexuals.
