The Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cuban Missile Crisis took place on October 16, 1962 and lasted for thirteen days. It involved the Soviet Union and the United States. Both countries during that time were trying to get a nuclear advantage. The United States got Turkey as an ally and location for nuclear missile to be hypnotically launched on the Soviet Union. To counter act this, the Soviet Union shipped mid-range ballistic missiles to Cuba. On October 14 a U2 photographed that Cuba, beyond a reasonable doubt, had missiles. In response President Kennedy announced on television the discovery of the missiles and proclaimed that any nuclear missile attack from Cuba would be regarded as an attack by the Soviet Union and would be responded to accordingly. Although Khrushchev reassured the United States that the missiles in Cuba were strictly for the protection of Cuba from another United States invasion, President Kennedy announced a blockade around Cuba. Russia then send two different peace deals to the United States; one, in a letter, saying that the Russia would remove the missiles if the United States promised that they would not invade Cuba; the second, a radio announcement, saying the Russia also wanted the United States to remove the missiles in Turkey as well. The United States agreed to the first deal but publicly said no to the second. Eventually both countries came to the agreement that the missiles would be removed and the United States would promise not to invade Cuba. Also the United States would have to remove missiles from Turkey in the next six months.
