The Faces of Beauty

"Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be?" That is a good question we should ask ourselves. Who where you before you society had such an impact on your life? The negative influences on popular culture because of television has increased over the last 40 years. Some shows encourage the change of a women to fit the standard picture of beauty. Television has played a big role in our daily lives. TV has become this beautiful thing in our eyes because it can provide us with something more interesting than what we are used to.

Popular Shows Having Negative Influences

Shows like "Americas Next Top Model" and "The Swan" have had a negative influence on our society by portraying what women "should" look like. Marwick stated that the show "The Swan" "draws from cultural discourses of plastic surgery and self-improvement culture to frame cosmetic surgery as a morally appropriate [mean] to [achieve] an authentic self" (2010, p. 252). The shows on television today are much stricter with beauty than the beauty standards 40 years ago.

Television Control

We as humans love television and watch it often. We watch television so much that it becomes a part of our daily life and becomes "ritual" (2012, p. 118). Gerbner states that in most family households the "television is on more than seven hours per day. It has its own rhythm, often governing the rhythm of the home" (2012, p. 118). Television is attractive to us because the characters in shows live lives that are much more interesting than that of our own. Gerbner states that "people will watch television because no one is going to take that away from them. And they will watch it until and unless something more attractive can be provided in their everyday lives" (2012, p. 119). In his essay Gerbner explains to us that because we live such boring uninteresting lives that we spend a lot of our time watching others on TV live more dramatic ones.

Conclusion
