The Garbage Crisis: What is it and how are we dealing with it?

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the Garbage Crisis in America and the two main ways the problem is dealt with.

Central Idea: The two ways Americans deal with the Garbage Crisis are recycling, and dumping in landfills.

Introduction

I. How many people in this room go grocery shopping and think consciously about the waste that will be produced from your purchases? What about where this waste goes after you throw it away?

II. Today I want to explain to you the crisis America faces when it comes to getting rid of waste and the process we use to deal with this huge problem.

A. The garbage crisis in America is basically just an over supply of rubbish with an under supply of places to put it.

B. This in turn causes a sky rocket in the coast it takes to get ride of the waste and it is starting to put a strain on our economy.

1. This huge increase in coast is causing billions of dollars A year to get rid of trash, when it could be used to go somewhere else.

C. Why are the prices so high?

1. The laws that govern landfills have become stricter and stricter causing the opening of new landfills to become challenging.

2. Another reason is that most citizens also suffer from the nimby (not in my back yard) syndrome and protest the idea of a landfill developing in there community.

D. According to Michael Raymond., the president of Raymond Communications Inc. " an organization that tracks state recycling efforts" America is the leading throw away society of the world. We make up 20% of the population and we consume 80% of the total amount of resources.

III. After doing extensive research on the garbage crisis in America, I feel educated enough to explain the two main ways America gets ride of its waste.

IV. America gets ride of its waste is by recycling it, and dumping it into landfills,

(Internal Preview: The first way to manage garbage in America is by recycling. )

Body

I. Recycling is the reprocessing of materials into new products and it is the most emphasized ways to dealing with waste.

A. This is because it prevents useable materials from being wasted .

1. In 2004 The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) confirmed that recycling prevented 64 million tons of material from being buried in a landfill

2.This makes up 32% of the entire waste produced each year by Americans dramatically decreasing the amount of land needed to bury that material in the landfill for that year.

B. Recycling also reduces the amount of energy used to create goods.

1. According to the EPA it takes 95% less energy to make an aluminum can out of recycled material than it does to make it out of raw material.

2.So not only can we save space by not burying the aluminum, we can also save money buy reusing it.

C. Recycling does have a few drawbacks though.

1. According to some critics recycling some kinds of materials does nothing for the environment.

2. For example, the world is not running short on sand therefore the recycling of glass is pointless. It cost more money to transport recycled glass to be reused than it does just to make new glass.

3. On the other hand though reusing the glass keeps it from being buried in a landfill and this saves quit a bit of space because glass makes up 5% of the amount
