THE GRAPES OF WRATH

Having both read the book and seen the movie of The Grapes of Wrath, I was able to decipher certain aspects better described in word than in picture. I also was able to find aspects better portrayed in picture than in words.

One aspect in The Grapes of Wrath that was better portrayed in writing was when Tom Joad hitched a ride from a trucker. When Tom receives the ride, the book goes more into detail with the discussion. The truck driver and Tom get to talking about where he is from and where he has been. Tom keeps to himself for a while and then tells the truck driver that he has been in prison the past four years and that he is headed home to his folk's place. Where as in the movie Tom keeps to himself for most of the ride and only tells a little bit about himself.

An aspect that was better depicted in the movie was when Uncle John and the kids went into the store and he bought them gum or candy. It was better portrayed in the movie because you could see the emotions on the children's faces. You can see that they wanted the gum or candy and Uncle John then asks the lady if it is penny candy and she says yes. When in actuality the gum or candy was five cents a piece. So he buys it for the children and they seem hesitant to take it at first, but when Uncle John convinces them to take it they become excited. Suddenly their faces are filled with joy; then they happily run out of the store with their candy or gum.

A movie that mirrors The Grapes of Wrath pretty well is The Warriors. It mirrors The Grapes of Wrath because in this movie there is a gang of people, who are like family to each other, named The Warriors. This gang is wanted by just about every gang in the city and they have to fight to survive. If they do not fight their way through the city they will never make it home or survive.
