Maurits Cornelis Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, as the smallest of four belonging to an engineer. His childhood was spent in Arnhem. When the time to enter high school came, Escher took the exam but unfortunately failed them. However, he took the option of enrolling himself in a school named the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem in 1920. In the school, he was given inspiration and encouragement to pursue graphic arts instead of his father's interest for Maurits-- architecture.
Once he graduated, he traveled around Italy where he met his future wife Jetta Umiker. He didn't stop once he was married, however. He explored the depths of Italy and along the Mediterranean in search of his ideal designs of symmetry. Yet history caught up with him as the Second World War stifled his progress which he made, as his family had to move to Baarn, Holland. However he kept on with his work and made excellent notes which would benefit him later on as he met a life long friend, Harold Coxeter. Coxeter would come to display Escher's work and launch Escher's fame.
Escher lectures and exhibits of his work extended the popularity and knowledge of tessellations all through the early portion of the mid-eighteenth century. He continued to work on his craft and sojourn around the world to tell of them until 1964, where he halted his tour due to illness. His final work, Snakes, was displayed before his sad death in Laren, Netherlands on March 27th, 1972.
