The Little Professionals
Studying this course, BIO 310L or commonly known as Biotech for one whole
sem is considered as a real total experience for me. Back then when I was still in my first year of
my course, I was wondering how are those slides that we were using at our laboratory were
made. Now that I expericed how to make slides myself, it really overwhelmed me.
I learned a lot in this course. The most common procedure we used in the study
of tissues is the preparation of histological sections that can be studied with the aid of the light
microscope. And because tissues and organs are usually too thick for light to pass through
them, our professors told us several times that they must be sectioned to obtain thin, translucent
sections and then attached to glass slides before they can be examined.
This is the familiar steps that sticks on my mind while making those slides,
fixation, dehydrations, embedding, staining, clearing, aand mounting, following certain time
indicated on our manual and its sequence may vary. The last experiment, which was thas
animal tissue preparation is the most unforgettable for me. Repeating most of the steps for
almost a month is quite helpful for me to remember the sequence. And whole will not remember
our microtome experience? The quite bloody part of our experiment. But all in all, There is one
thing that this course taught us, and that is discipline. And discipline is involve from following
slide preparaion steps, and to the simplest things like wearing complete laboratory attire like
masks, labgowns, caps, and gloves which are aslo very important. And now that I know already
how to make histological slides, I feel that I am now a little biotech professional.
