The Making of a Speech

Public speech is a source of stress for many people. One reason for this might be due to the size of the audience. There are several techniques that one might use for breaking the tension. One would be to grab their attention in the beginning. Doing this is very easy, breaking the ice could be as simple as stating a dramatic (and relevant) quote, a profound statistic asking a rhetorical question or telling a short story.

Another important part of giving a great speech is how well you know the information. The information has to be relevant to your audience. You need to make sure that you know the information well, this includes being well organized. Your speech should not be read or memorized but a healthy balanced between the two. This will help keep the audience attentive to what you are saying. It will also show that you are interested in their understanding of the subject.

Delivery of the speech is also very important. How you give your speech will show the audience how intelligent you feel they are. If you appear to be talking down to them then they will lose interest in what you have to say. It is important for you to maintain eye contact and speak loud and clear. Keeping good eye contact will allow you to see the non-verbal feedback and reassuring the listeners that you are still speaking to them. Speaking a loud voice will ensure that you will be heard. Listeners will not strain to hear you, they will simply not listen.

Another tip that you should also remember is to end when you say you are ending. Make it known that you have come to the end by using signal phases such as in conclusion, as I leave you and just before I go. This will let the audience know that you have come to the end of your speech which is especially important if your speech was a long speech. One more thought before I leave you to write your very first speech is to always remember, know your information, maintain good eye contact, speak clearly and use correct posture and grammar.
