Photos of Faces (Levy et al., 1972)
Levy and his colleague were investigating that how would splitting the brain affect language and other abilities. In this research, the researchers took photographs of different faces, cut them in two, and pasted different halves together. Then the researchers showed the recreated picture to the split-brain patients on slides. The researchers also told the patients to stare at a dot on the middle of the screen, so that the half the image fell to the left of this point and half to the right. At the same time, they slide the pictures so fast that the patient had no time to move his or her eyes. When the asked the patient what they had seen, they said that they had seen the face on the right side of the composite--yet they pointed with their left hands to the face that had been on the left.
This investigation showed the researcher that the two cerebral hemisphere could not communicate, the verbal left hemisphere was aware of only the right half of the picture, and the relatively mute right hemisphere aware of only the left half.
