Since we were all little, we've heard about Superman, Batman, or Spiderman saving the day, or making a difference, even if it's just getting a cat out of a tree. We also know about policemen and firemen, some real life heroes. But what about the people who we don't hear about, the ones that quietly makes a difference without thanks? I finally took my chance to experience what it's like to be one of those people.
I walked into the West Boise YMCA with little butterflies in my stomach and a heart ready to serve. The secretary led me to the back to meet two smiling faces, Brenda and Mr. Blane. Brenda, a happy, middle aged woman showed me the ropes, consisting of folding towels and putting them away, wiping tables, and sweeping floors.
Brenda apparently fell and hurt her arms a week before, and was relieved to have a helping hand. I was happy to push around the cart full of towels and wipe tables in exchange for Brenda's bubbly laugh and stories.
Before this experience, I never truly noticed or appreciated all the hard labor those who work "behind the scenes" accomplished. Brenda, who had shooting pain in her arms the entire time, kept her complaints to herself, complimented me on my work, and all the while gave me good advice about jobs and life. Her positive attitude inspired me to work harder and give my best at every task I was given. She made me want to better myself and become a quiet hero.
