One of the main ideas in slave dancer is freedom and not just in the physical state but also the mental. First we see how Jessie doesn't feel free in his family but stuck in the shadows. When he gets kidnaped he truly get to see what physically being imprisoned is like. You don't have to be tied up to be a "prisoner" but rather not being able to do or say what you want to. He got trapped in that world with wanting to do nothing with it but just go home to his family . We see this in The Slave Dancer through the whole book we get a glimpse of what life was for a slave while they were getting shipped to places through ships. They didn't have the freedom to reject the master or else they would get killed. It was such a horrendous part of history.
This applies to life because the United States prides with being the land of the free. Through out world history not just us but everywhere people, countries, religion etc. fight to be free. For example in England they are a catholic country ,but some people didn't believe in that and were in danger because of it. The left England in hopes of finding land to be able to worship who ever they wanted to and didn't care about the consequences. How many wars have there been in history in hopes of having freedom? A lot have happened and more will come if people don't think the have the freedom they deserve. Thankfully, we live in the united states where you have the freedom to do anything you would like. So this saying I can marry Harry styles because I have the freedom that I get to pick my husband unlike in some countries where parents arrange marriages.
